AI suggestions not appearing

If AI suggestions, action buttons, or the Smart Panel are not appearing in Convo, this guide will help you diagnose and resolve common issues.

Quick checklist

Before troubleshooting, verify these requirements:

  • • You are logged into your Convo account
  • • You have clicked the "Listen" button to start recording
  • • Microphone permission is granted
  • • Dictation is enabled in System Settings
  • • You have not exceeded your daily rate limit
  • • You have an active internet connection

Understanding AI features

Smart Panel

The Smart Panel displays real-time conversation analysis, action buttons, and AI insights during meetings. Activated by clicking "Listen" or pressing ⌘↩ for Ask AI mode.

Action Buttons

Context-aware suggestions generated from your conversation (e.g., "☕ Does Gabriel want to meet for coffee?" or "📊 Explain the pricing discussed"). Updated every 8-10 seconds during active conversations.

Ask AI

Spotlight-style interface (⌘↩) with three modes: Context (analyzes conversation), Screen (analyzes visual content), and Search (web search).

Common issues

Not logged in

AI features require authentication. Check if your account name appears in the app's top bar.

  1. Click "Sign In" and authenticate
  2. Verify your session hasn't expired
  3. If issues persist, sign out and sign back in

Recording not active

AI suggestions only appear during active recording sessions.

  1. Click the "Listen" button in the Convo toolbar
  2. Speak for at least 10-15 seconds to generate context
  3. Wait 8-10 seconds for AI to analyze the conversation

Microphone permission denied

Without microphone access, Convo cannot capture audio or generate suggestions.

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
  2. Find "Convo" and enable the toggle
  3. Restart Convo after granting permission

Dictation disabled

Convo uses macOS Dictation for speech recognition. This must be enabled at the system level.

  1. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation
  2. Turn Dictation ON
  3. Download language pack if prompted (may take several minutes)
  4. Restart Convo after enabling Dictation

Note: Dictation is a macOS system requirement, not a Convo-specific setting. Speech recognition will not work if Dictation is disabled.

Rate limit exceeded

Each plan has daily AI request limits:

  • Starter Plan ($14.99-$19.99/month): 100 requests/day
  • Professional Plan ($37.99-$49.99/month): 2,000 requests/day

Limits reset at midnight UTC. Upgrade your plan for higher limits or wait until reset.

No internet connection

AI features require active connectivity to OpenAI's API and Convo's backend.

  1. Verify your internet connection is active
  2. Check if your firewall is blocking Convo
  3. Try disconnecting from VPN temporarily
  4. Restart Convo after restoring connectivity

Smart Panel hidden

  1. Try triggering Ask AI with ⌘↩
  2. Click "Listen" button to restart analysis
  3. Check if panel is positioned off-screen (try moving it)
  4. Restart Convo to reset UI state

Advanced troubleshooting

Screen analysis not working

Ask AI's Screen mode requires Screen Recording permission:

  1. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording
  2. Enable "Convo" in the list
  3. Restart Convo (required for permission to take effect)
  4. Try Screen mode by clicking "Screen" before asking

Check system logs

For technical users, Console.app provides detailed errors:

  • [OpenAI] - API call status
  • [COST] - Rate limit checks
  • [SPEECH] - Speech recognition status
  • [OVERLAY] - Smart Panel visibility

Still having issues?

If AI suggestions still don't appear, contact support with:

  • Your Convo account email
  • Your current plan tier
  • macOS version (System Settings → General → About)
  • Description of what you see (or don't see)
  • Any error messages from Console.app
