Slack does not offer native huddle or voice call recording, so you need a third party tool to capture the audio. Convo records any Slack huddle or voice call automatically with AI transcription, summaries, and action items delivered after the call.

How to Record Slack Huddles

Slack has no built-in recording. Here are the methods that actually work, the difference between Huddles and Clips, and what to use instead.

Updated March 20267 min read

Quick answer: No, Slack Huddles are not recorded. Slack has no built-in recording feature on any plan, including Enterprise Grid. To capture a Huddle, use a screen recorder (free) or an AI meeting assistant like Convo that captures audio and generates notes automatically.

Slack has no native recording

Unlike Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet, Slack does not offer any built-in way to record Huddles or calls. This applies to all plans. Slack has not announced plans to add recording.

Slack Clips vs Huddles: what's the difference?

People often confuse these two features. They serve completely different purposes.

Huddles

Live, real-time audio/video calls within Slack. Like a spontaneous meeting.

  • Real-time conversation
  • Screen sharing, threads, reactions
  • Up to 50 participants
  • No recording
  • No transcript saved

Clips

Short, pre-recorded audio or video messages (max 5 minutes). Like a voice note.

  • Record and send async
  • Auto-transcribed
  • Saved in the channel/DM
  • 5-minute max length
  • Not a live call — async only

Clips are not a substitute for recording Huddles. They're a different feature for a different purpose.

How to record Slack Huddles

Since there's no built-in option, you need an external tool. Here are the two approaches that work.

Screen recording (Mac & Windows)

Capture your screen and audio while the Huddle is active. Free, but you get a raw video file with no transcription or notes.

Mac (QuickTime)

  1. Press Cmd + Shift + 5
  2. Select "Record Selected Portion"
  3. Drag over your Slack window
  4. Click Record, then Stop when done

QuickTime doesn't capture system audio natively. Use BlackHole (free) for Huddle audio.

Windows (Xbox Game Bar)

  1. Press Win + G to open Game Bar
  2. Click the Record button (or Win + Alt + R)
  3. Select your Slack window
  4. Press Stop when finished

Game Bar captures system audio by default on Windows 10/11.

Convo (AI meeting notes)

Convo captures audio from any application on your device — including Slack Huddles — and generates AI transcripts, summaries, and action items. No bot joins the Huddle, no recording notification, no video files to manage.

A note on consent

Since Slack has no native recording, there's no automatic notification to participants when you use a third-party tool. Recording laws still apply — many jurisdictions require all-party consent. Always inform Huddle participants before capturing audio. For a detailed breakdown, see our guide on recording consent and legality.
