How to Record Webex Meetings

Cloud vs local recording, free plan limitations, what to do as a participant, and where to find your recordings.

Updated April 20267 min read

Quick answer: Click the Record button and choose "Record in cloud" (paid plans) or "Record on my computer" (free, desktop app only). Only hosts and cohosts can record. Participants cannot record in Webex without being promoted to cohost.

Webex has the most restrictive recording permissions

Unlike Zoom (where hosts can grant participant recording) or Teams (where any org member can record), Webex only allows hosts and cohosts to record. Regular attendees have no Record button at all.

Your site admin can further restrict this in Control Hub, disabling recording entirely or limiting it to hosts only (excluding cohosts).

Step-by-step: Record in Webex

You must be the host or cohost. Attendees do not see the Record button.

1

Start or join as host/cohost

Open Webex and begin your meeting. You must have host or cohost privileges to record.

2

Click the Record button

Find it in the meeting controls at the bottom of your screen.

3

Choose recording location

Select "Record in cloud" (paid plans) or "Record on my computer" (all plans, desktop only).

4

Stop when finished

Click the Record button again and select Stop. Local recordings are available immediately. Cloud recordings may take up to 24 hours to process.

Where to find your Webex recordings

Cloud recordings

Sign in to your Webex site and go to:

User Hub → Recordings

Cloud recordings can take up to 24 hours to appear after the meeting ends.

How to record Webex as a participant

Webex doesn't let attendees record. If you're not the host or cohost, these methods work independently of Webex permissions.

Screen recording (Mac & Windows)

Capture your screen while the Webex meeting is active. Works regardless of your role.

Mac (QuickTime)

Press Cmd + Shift + 5, select the Webex window, click Record. Use BlackHole (free) for system audio capture.

Windows (Xbox Game Bar)

Press Win + G, click Record (or Win + Alt + R). Captures system audio by default.

Troubleshooting

Record button is greyed out or missing

You're either an attendee (not host/cohost), or your site admin has disabled recording in Control Hub. Ask the host to make you cohost, or use a screen recorder or Convo to capture notes independently.

Cloud recording not appearing

Cloud recordings can take up to 24 hours to process. Check User Hub → Recordings on your Webex site. If it still doesn't appear after 24 hours, your cloud storage may be full — check your plan's storage allocation.

Can't find local recording files

Local recordings save to Documents/Webex/Recordings on Windows or ~/Webex/Recordings on Mac. If files are missing, the recording may have failed — check that you had enough disk space during the meeting.

Error: "Can't record the meeting"

This usually means your Webex cloud recording storage is full (not your computer's disk space — Webex's own allocation). Try switching to local recording, or ask your admin to increase cloud storage in Control Hub.

A note on consent

Webex's built-in recording notifies all participants with a visual indicator. If you use screen recording or a third-party tool instead, participants won't be notified. Recording laws vary by location — always inform participants before capturing a meeting. For details, see our guide on recording consent and legality.
